"Des hommes poussaient, une armée noire, vengeresse, qui germait lentement dans les sillons, grandissant pour les récoltes du siècle futur, et dont la germination allait faire bientôt éclater la terre." - Emile Zola, Germinal.
▶︎ In its composition, “Germinal” seats in between the series of "deconstructed geometries" and "abstract landscapes". It is characterized by the use of a specific palette, mostly dark with a few vivid colors and agressive contrasts.
It means to evoke the dark hours of the 2nd industrial evolution, the origins of the "mouvement ouvrier" in the coal mining world, culminating with the fight and repression of the Paris Commune and birth of the 1st socialist movement.
The dark tones and agressive contrasts contribute to give an overall feeling of oppression and menacing atmosphere to the painting, highlighting the deconstructed shapes reminiscent of the coal miners shovels that later morphed into the hammer and sickle symbol, contrasting with the red of the spilled blood of the French communards.
▶︎ “Germinal” is part of a series of Abstract paintings submitted for the Luxembourg Art Prize 2020, that I am now releasing as Limited Editions (60). A small number of these fine-art prints are made on canvas and embellished by hand with Acrylic paint and medium to give it texture and make each one a unique piece.
▶︎ It is available in multiple dimensions, please reach out for more details!
